Travel Vaccine Consultations

Objectives:

  1. Recognize the pharmacist’s pivotal role in recommending and administering
    travel vaccines and understand how this contributes to public health and
    patient safety.
  2. Review key vaccine-preventable food and waterborne illnesses encountered
    during travel, including Diarrhea caused by LT-producing Escherichia coli (ETEC),
    Hepatitis A, Typhoid Fever. Briefly discuss the potential adverse effects of using
    antibiotics to treat traveler’s diarrhea during
    international travel and highlight the importance of prevention over treatment.
  3. Explain the epidemiology, clinical features, risks, and outcomes of common
    mosquito-borne diseases affecting traveler’s, such as Chikungunya, Dengue,
    Japanese Encephalitis, Yellow Fever.
  4. Evaluate vaccine options available in Canada to protect travelers against
    mosquito-borne diseases, including indications, contraindications, and administration.
