Full Name
Dwight Ball
Speaker Bio
Dwight Ball sought to become a pharmacist, not a politician.

In a career marked by community service, Dwight embraced his profession as a community pharmacist from where he established a network of businesses as a successful entrepreneur. He embraced supportive employment for persons with disabilities, volunteered and took on regulatory and advocacy roles, including a term as CPhA President in 2009.

First elected in 2007 to the provincial legislature, he took on a job in 2012 few others wanted: Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). Undaunted by challenge, he rebuilt the party leading it to an unprecedented seven consecutive by-election wins before being sworn in as the 13th Premier of NL in 2015.

During his five years as Premier, Dwight assumed the portfolios of Labrador & Indigenous Affairs and Intergovernmental Affairs. He focused on building strong ties with Indigenous organizations and sought to stimulate economic activity and make targeted social reforms.

In 2020, he earned praise for his steady hand and communicative approach during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Calm in the face of pressure while emphasizing public health advice, this laid the foundation for the province to emerge as one of the safest jurisdictions in North America.
